Okay, So you have a product you are trying to sell to people but you are not getting as many hits as you would like. As I’ve said before, traffic is the life blood of any internet business and if you don’t have it you might as well close your doors. So exactly how does one get traffic to their web sites? I thought you’d never ask.

Be the expert

This seems to be easier said than done. How does one become an expert, let alone market them selves as one? There are a couple ways you can do this. I’ll keep it brief and probably expound on this in another article. Learn everything you can about the niche in which you are marketing. If you are selling apples, learn everything apple related that you might be able to market. Learn about apple sauce, apple juice, apple pie, so on and so forth. This is also a great opportunity to be able to upsell apples. It will be a lot easier to sell something else to your customer if they’ve bought from you once.

Market yourself as the Expert

It’s not enough just to know everything you can about something. Other people have to know you know…you know? How do you let people in on your untapped knowledge? You can add insight in online forums of your niche. Just try not to plug your product immediately. If you build a relationship with the members, they will be more receptive to your recommendations. You can submit informative videos on YouTube. This is a great way to get exposure and a fan base. Carry this over to Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites and you can get a lot of exposure very quickly. You can also write articles and reviews on types of apple based products and submit them to different ezines. The list goes on, but however you decide to go about it, be creative and informative. Potential customers enjoy free stuff and advice is something that you will never run out of. I will go into YouTube and social networking sites for traffic on another article so onto the next point.

Make sure your Web Site is up to code!

Meta tags used to be a REALLY big deal back a few years ago but the internet is evolving. Tags are still good to have as far as indexing goes but having a well thought out web site is also equally crucial. Plan out your web site and think about who you are marketing to. This should determine how your presentation is. Remember, don’t try to sell right up front. Offer your expertise, video reports and reviews about different products. When you are good to go, submit your web site to the major search engines. Also, try to get link backs to your web site as much as possible. This will help your search rating immensely. I could easily write an article on Web Site Format alone. Actually, I think I might just do that. Be sure to keep an eye out for it!

Stay tuned for updates on how to explode your internet business!

When people hear that links hold weight with the search engines, the first thing they do is comb the website looking for people to link with. They don’t pay attention to whether these links are incoming or reciprocal links; instead they focus on any and every link they can find. Because all links do not hold the same value, beware of links that don’t benefit your website. It is important to understand which links draw attention to your site and which ones have no value at all. In some cases having too many outbound links can hurt your search engine rankings.

What Are The Best Links?

First, you want to have links pointing to your website and not vice versa. When the search engine spiders crawl your web pages and they detect the links pointing to your site and pointing from your site. Links pointing to your site is a sign that you are important, that your website has value and that is why other websites have your link on their page.

You always want links that are relevant to your niche. For example, if you are promoting designer dog collars, having a link for auto parts will not be of any value to you because it is totally irrelevant.

You should pick and choose your links carefully. It is said that sites that have been up for a long time have value, but this isn’t always the case. Sites that aren’t updated are crawled less frequently by the search engines and therefore, being linked to these sites won’t help you much. You are looking for sites with quality content, frequent updates, and that have some relevance to what you are promoting.

What Are The Worst Links?

Paid links or link farms should be avoided. While the offers may look appealing, these often result in links that will do nothing for your website.

Some visit auction sites to purchase links. These can be found on EBay and perhaps other sites where people are basically renting you links. They charge a monthly fee to put your link on their page and as long as you pay the fee, your link remains on their website. If you choose to go this route, you need to fully understand what type of site you will be linked to, the page rank of the website, and where on the website your link will be listed.

My feeling is you don’t have to buy links from other people. With a little work and a good website, you can gain links through contacting the webmaster. Sure some will say no, but you just move on to the next one. Why pay for something that may be poor quality, when you can get top notch links for free.

Content is King And So Are Links

With all the talk of search engine optimization, PPC campaigns, the importance of rich content, and other marketing strategies, what it all comes down to are links pointing to your web pages. Yes, SEO and rich content is necessary, content is king and so are links.

It has been proven time and time again web pages that have longevity on the web and a tremendous number of links rank higher in the search engines. It goes without saying that if you have been around the internet block a few times, and have developed an online presence, it is easier to get links. What about the newcomer? How does someone just starting out get links for their website?

Press Releases

If you have just launched a new business, this is newsworthy information, so send it out in a press release. There are a number of free press release submission sites as well as paid sites. When you submit a press release and it is picked up, the link to your company will be mentioned, which not only means exposure, but also a link pointing back to your website.

Directory Submission

There is a recent overcrowding of directory submission sites, so you have to know which ones you should submit to. While the main directories such as Google and Yahoo!Directory are at the forefront, there is also DMOZ, Best of the Web, and many others to consider. If you do a quick search for directory submission sites you will see that submission sites are plentiful and while some of them are just starting out and don’t have many submissions, this would be a great time to get your website listed before they grow and start charging for what you can get for free today.

Starting a Blog

If you have a blog for your business or are thinking of one, this is a great way to get links. If your content is compelling, others will often link back to you, for that reason alone. Once you create a couple of links, others will follow because you have information worth sharing. Many internet marketers have seen tremendous growth in business just from blog posting, so if you don’t have a blog, consider starting one.

Local Organizations and Charities

If you participate in charity events or local organizations, consider asking them to link to your website. If you deal with any local businesses regularly, find out if they have a website and ask them to link to your website. These could be places that you frequent, like a local printer or where you get your business supplies from.

When you start building links remember you only want quality links. This means that you want links from web pages that are relevant to your business. The value of the websites you link to holds a lot of weight with the search engines and just having numerous links with no relevancy will not necessarily help your rankings.

Link Baiting Strategies

The idea of link baiting is to create a piece of content which is centered on a set demand from a specific audience.
Who do you want to relate to? Why would they care? What would make them likely to spread your idea?

Some common link baiting techniques such as 1-Talk about a specific community, 2-Give people a way to feel important about themselves,
someone they care about, or something they feel should be important, 3-Take recent events and scale them out to others in your community.4-Be provocative or controversial,
5-Be a contrarian, 6-Be thorough.

There are multiple types of linkbait, those that are known as controversial and those which are informational or comprehensive.
Important information about link baiting:
* Make it easy to identify and connect with. Think about human emotions and tap the sense of empathy.
* You may want to make your idea look polarized such that it especially appeals to one group and/or especially offends another. If other people are fighting over guessing your intentions you will get quality links.
* Make your link bait look comprehensive.
– Perception is more important than reality.
– Most writing is quite wasteful in nature, because you have to trim off much of what you create.
– By creating ordered lists of factoids an incomplete story can look well researched, even if it is not.
* Cite research, further reading, and link out to related resources from within your content. It makes your story look well researched and associates your work with other trusted names or brands in your field. You may even want to cite a few people that you want links from.
* Dress up your link bait using quality design and / or relevant images from sites.
* Ask for feedback from people who may be interested in helping you improve your idea or helping you market it.
* Leverage friends and contacts via instant message and email.
* Pitch relevant bloggers and media sources. It is preferable to build rapport prior to pitching.
* Build accounts on social news sites.
* Some social news sites allow you to place voting buttons on your site. Do so on your most important ideas.
* Consider the best times and locations to launch your idea.
* Have a friend or yourself submit your best ideas to the most authoritative and relevant social news sites.
– Ensures your story has a title that is easy to vote for.
– Ensures your story is submitted at an appropriate time.
– If you do not do it soon after mentioning a story on your own site someone else may submit for you, using a dumb title or dumb post content.
* Make your link bait EASY to link at.
* Don’t over-monetize it right out of the gate. Make it look like research which is easy to cite rather than a piece of commercial information.
* In Fame vs Fortune: Micropayments and Free Content Clay Shirky stressed the importance of gaining authority to gain scale and distribution if you want to make money online.
* Spread out your ideas. For example, if you are forming a new partnership you can triple dip on publicity:
– Interview partners on another channel.
– Announce the launch.
– Add linkbait to the site at a later point in time.
* Link bait rarely makes much money or directly pays for itself from the direct traffic. However, it has amazing indirect value.
– People who pay attention to the active portions of the web are far more likely to be web publishers than those who do not.
– Even if people do not link to your link bait idea right away you still gain mindshare and brand recognition amongst a group of people who have significant authority.
– Many search engines, such as Google, use authority centric relevancy algorithms. Editorial links are seen as votes or signs of trust.
– In Google, getting a link to any part of your site will help make all pages on your site more authoritative.
* Social news sites and social bookmarking sites have recently popular lists that many people read.
* Meme trackers track what stories are quickly spreading through the blogosphere.
* Exposure on either of these can cause additional exposure and more linkage data. Many bloggers and some mainstream media outlets (like the MSNBC Clicked Blog) use these social news sites to find stories or sources.

Advantage of the link baiting such as 1. Backlinks to the article, 2. Branding, 3. Rankings and 4. Direct traffic.

Be careful what you name your link bait ideas. If your link bait is well executed and targets keywords important to other pages on your site the link bait will likely outrank
your other pages in the search results.

Submit Your Site to Dmoz Directory

The open directory project is one of the most highly respected directory on the internet. Due to the diligence of the editors, only quality sites that provide useful information will be listed. The open directory is managed by a group of volunteered editors. The submission of the site is evaluated by the editor.

Since Dmoz accept lots of submission every day, it is very hard for them to review all the sites because of the limited editors. The editors are not paid and hold their own job. The editor will only review the site during his or her free time. Due to this fact, it can take a long time to get approved. Sometimes, error in the database occur. As a result, all the submission details are wiped out from the database. Users will then have to resubmit their site and queue the backlog.

To maintain the Dmoz directory, the editors have set up a submission guidelines. If the users violate these policies, their site will be deleted from the database. Before submitting to the Dmoz directory, you should take some time to read the submission guidelines.

Determine if the Site is Appropriate for Submission

The Dmoz directory has several strict requirements on the websites they accept. Mirror sites are not allowed. Mirror sites refer to sites that contain same content but use a different URL. Sites that contain similar content of sites which are already listed in the directory will also be rejected. For example, an affiliate site is not recommended for submission since the official site is already listed in the dmoz directory. The URL should not be submitted multiple times. Generally, you should only resubmit after 3 months if it is still not approved in the directory. The site which you submit must not redirect to a different address. In addition, site with illegal content such as pornography, or material that infringes the intellectual copyright protection will not be considered for submission.

Next, you should check the directory to make sure your site is not already listed. After that, you must identify the right category for the site. The open directory has a lot of categories which you can choose from so there should be one category that is relevant to the site. If you submit to an unrelated category, the site may be rejected. You should submit the website to the lowest level of category. Some categories don’t have the suggest URL link. If the categories don’t have the suggest URL link, it means the site cannot be submitted to the category. Sites with pornographic content will also be declined by the editors.

When submitting the site to Dmoz, make sure it is already finished. There should not be a single page that is under construction. If there is any part of the site that is unfinished, you should finish it first before submitting to the Dmoz directory. Sites that has under construction sign are less likely to get listed.

Submitting the Site

After selecting the best category, you can click on the suggest URL link. The submission page contain a submission guidelines. The descriptions should be brief and accurately describe all the content on the site. The description should only describe the site and cannot contain promotional words. If the description is more promotional than objective, the approval time for the site will be delayed since the editor will have to spend time to correct the description. Using auto submission software to submit to Dmoz directory is a violation of the Dmoz submission guidelines. The site which are submitted through an automatic software will be recorded into the blacklists. Sites in the blacklists will be prohibited from being listed in the directory. The Dmoz directory will not send an email notification to inform that your site is deleted. If you persistently use automatic submission, your IP address will be banned. Once they banned your IP address, you will no longer access the site.

After You Submit the Site

After submitting the site, the editor will review your submission to see if it meet with the requirement to be listed in the directory. If there is a long backlog in that particular category, it will take a longer time for the site to approve. Sometimes, if the editor is online, it can immediately approve the site within a few minutes. Submission of different URL from the same site is not encouraged.

After the site is listed on Dmoz, it will take 2 weeks for the search engine spiders to crawl the site. Dmoz are supported by many major search engines such as Yahoo, Google, Bing, Ask.com and others. If the site did not appear on the search engine after 2 weeks, you can contact the editor.

If you want to speed up the approval time, make sure the site don’t have broken links. You can use an broken link checker to check the link on the site. In addition, the site navigation should be user friendly. Typically, the user should not click more the two links in order to get the destination page. The content on the site should be unique. Site with professional template usually get approved much faster. The most important thing is that the site must provide useful information for the public. The information must not be already provided by the sites listed in Dmoz directory. For example, you can submit a site about that teaches people how to create embroidery of designs which is developed by you.

Update Your Site Title and Description

Sometimes, the editor will make modification to the title and description of the listing. If you are unsatisfied, you can send a request by using the update URL form. You should always be polite and show respect to the editor otherwise your listing will be deleted. In the update URL form, you must include the reason why you want to make the modification and how you want them to be corrected. Generally, it will take up to 3 days for the editor to respond.
